SPUAT Freshman WR Suspended For First 2 Games

Vandy & South Carolina

Nice job by the 'Dores and 'Cocks last night.

I thought that NC State would give a little tougher match to USC but they didn't have a chance. Though USC didn't look particularly good, especially in the first half. Beecher did not look like the better quarterback and Smelley did. Beecher was throwing too many balls up for grabs. NC State looks like they are going to challenge Duke for ACC anti-supremacy. Will Visor, Jr. hold on to his OC job for another week?

I was proud of Vandy last night. They were the underdog against a solid MAC team on the road and dominated that game. Vandy may not make a bowl game this year but Bobby Johnson has the program the strongest it has been on a year to year basis in my lifetime. He will get them to a bowl game eventually.

Goodbye, Daves. You will be missed.

But not your gawd-awful broadcasts. Watching a JP/LF/Raycom game was like watching someone trying to film a whole football game on their cell phone camera only with worse graphics.

Things WRAS won't miss:

1) The score updates that were always two quarters behind the actual game action.
2) The purple first down line that was never right.
3) The fuzzy, almost anti-HD screens.
4) Dave "Buzz" Baker's sideline easel-style chair and his double-breasted jackets.
5) Commercials that seemed to come out of nowhere and interrupt game action or coming back from a commercial only to find you have missed a play.

Dave Rowe, though you have been out of our lives for a couple of years now, you'll always have a special place in our heart. Big man on big man.

Koenning takes a stab at Alabama's recruiting

Two weeks ago, defensive coordinator Vic Koenning answered a question of mine by saying he wasn't going to let his mouth overload his rear end. Well, it might have happened Monday night.

Koenning has long recruited southern Alabama (see Brandon Maye), and hyped Alabama freshman receiver Julio Jones is from down there (Foley, Ala.). I asked him a generic question about what he had heard from his connections about Jones, and here was his response: "Julio? You know what, I actually ran into Julio in the spring recruiting. I said hello to him and said, 'I guess I'll be seeing you at the end of August.' Then he got out and got in his Escalade and drove off. That's (being) serious. And then I went over and watched (Alabama freshman) Burton Scott at Vigor High School at the track over there, and Burton Scott was running around. He went and got in his Escalade out at track practice and drove off. S o I'm familiar with those two guys." Koenning said that in front of six reporters, all with tape recorders going. About 10 minutes later, he sought me out and asked if we (the media) knew he was kinda kidding around. It's one thing to kid around in casual conversation. It's quite another to make such allegations on the record, knowing it's likely to hit the Web in a matter of minutes. And it did. I have no idea whether he'd honestly take back what he said. B ut here's thinking he regretted saying it when he did.

Saban assistant faces disciplinary action for letter

By The Associated Press

PELL CITY, Ala. -- The administrative assistant for Alabama football coach Nick Saban used athletic department stationary to recommend probation for a man convicted of smuggling a small amount of marijuana into a state prison. Glenda Edwards faces possible disciplinary action from the university. Athletics spokesman Doug Walker said Edwards admitted to using department stationary to write the one-page letter to St. Clair County Circuit Court Judge Charles Robinson. She was seeking a sentence of probation for former correctional officer Tommie Borden. Borden and a former prison guard were convicted in June of second-degree promoting prison contraband and received two years in prison. Walker said Edwards was not available for comment.

Tuesday Conversation with Taylor Zarzour

Below is a conversation I had with Taylor Zarzour via email regarding the absence of Auburn, Tennessee and West Virginia from his AP Top 25 poll...

Sent: Monday, August 18, 2008 10:12 AM

To: taylor@curtismedia.com

Subject: AP Top 25

So what you're saying is that Auburn is not one of the Top 25 teams in the country? Or are you just a Bammer? It's people like you that make the way college football decides a national championship worthless.

I will certainly vote for Auburn if they deserve it during the season. I voted for them over Oklahoma in 2004. If they get to 5-0 I will gladly write every person that has sent me an email stating how far off I was, and you will see them ranked among my top 5 to 7 teams. It's simply a pre-season pick. They changed both coordinators, have a new system, haven't recruited players for that kind of system yet, have an inexperienced QB, play in the hardest conference on earth, and play WVU out of conference. So I am picking them to go 8-4. I certainly could be wrong. If so, I will put Auburn where they deserve.

I understand your right to vote any way that you please. What bothers me is the part on your station's website bio stating, and I am paraphrasing here, that you enjoy nothing better than Tennessee and Auburn losing and those two are not in your top 25. This is no way to determine a national champion.

If WVU is so tough out of conference, why are the Mountaineers not in your top 25? Auburn has played in the "hardest conference on earth" for 75+ years and that hasn't stopped them from having a strong team and finishing highly in the polls. That is a weak argument.

Auburn has the players for this system right now. Plus the fact that in 9 practices they defeated a Clemson team that had a top 10 defense last year. Now they have gone through a spring and a fall getting ready for this season. This is not an offense that takes a long time to install and they will be ready. Last year's offense was like watching someone get their pulled, it is not a stretch to say that the offense will be more consistent and put up more points.

The defense will not miss a beat as it is the same system, Tuberville's system, and Tubs has been trying to hire Paul Rhoads since before he hired Gene Chizik. I appreciate you writing me and I am not angry or trying to get you upset.

Thanks for writing and I look forward to your email in late September.

This will be impossible to believe but those things in the bio were put up there by one of our interns a few days ago. Given my family's background (several people have gone to Alabama) he thought it would be funny to put some stuff up there about Tennessee and Auburn. I did not approve it and it was not a good idea (given that I try as hard as I can to be an objective voter). Now, my bio looks exactly like the one that has always appeared on wptf.com and egolf.com. I assure you that I will send that email if you're right.

So was it an intern or "the stuff on the website was doctored by someone overnight"? The latter is an explanation you gave to a friend of mine who wrote you as well.

Here is the email he sent to a friend of WRAS...

I have no agenda against Auburn. I have family members that went to school there. The stuff on the website was doctored by someone overnight. I will certainly vote for Auburn if they deserve it during the season. I voted for them over Oklahoma in 2004. It's simply a pre-season pick. I certainly could be wrong. Just so we're on the same page, you are not an "avid Alabama fan" and your "greatest moment as a sports fan" is not Alabama's 34-13 win over Miami in the Sugar Bowl to win the 1992 national championship? And "any time Auburn and Tennessee lose" is not among your favorite things in sports?

Ray Melick's Cold Sore Weighs in on the DeRon Furr Situation

WRAS isn't sure what Ray Melick's Cold Sore is talking about when he essentially calls Furr weak. Maybe he means mentally weak and with that we'll agree. If Furr can't take the heat in his first fall practice, how can he handle a Saturday night in Baton Rouge? Because he couldn't mean physically since Furr is 6'3" and 212 pounds (while Zac Etheridge is 5'11" and 210 pounds). By all accounts Furr was loafing in practice and decided to talk back to Etheridge when called out by him. Etheridge took matters into his own hands and taught the freshman a lesson.

Code Red?

WRAS does not care if Finebaum (and Bill "Bubba" Bussey) is wearing an Auburn hat in the above picture, this guy is a Bammer of the highest order. The stuff that he, Ian Fitzsimmons and Jay Barker have been spewing this week that Tuberville and other coaches called for a "Code Red" on DeRon Furr is utterly ridiculous.

Ian Fitzsimmons is a drunk smut peddler and Finebaum is a sensationalist who does not have an athletic bone in his body (see his fishing skills w/ Rick Karle and Sa6an). Jay Barker for all of his blind allegiance to SPUAT should know better than to accuse Auburn of this. Fights happen all the time in sports and amongst teams in practice. This past week we have had Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers break a teammate's nose in a fight and Prince Fielder shove a teammate twice in the dugout during a game.

Whatever happened that caused the DeRon Furr situation (we may never know the exact reason why) is over and done with. It will not have a negative effect Auburn's recruiting nor will it have an impact on the 2008 team. The only thing it does effect is that Auburn now has another scholarship to offer a player who deserves it.

If this keeps up, eventually everyone in the above picture will be in street clothes against Georgia Southern.

First Practice Observations

WRAS attended Auburn's first practice on Saturday and while you have probably read a ton on the subject, here are some of my observations...

- Chris Todd is a lot bigger than the other QBs and had a lot of zip on the ball. He's very accurate and throws it almost effortlessly.
- Gabe McKenzie worked exclusively with the OL during the first few periods while Tommy Trott worked with the WRs and RBs during passing drills.
- Remember Carnell's TD pass to Anthony Mix during the 2004 UGa game? Robert Dunn threw one after he caught a little swing pass in the flat.
- Five QBs warmed up but then it was 90% Todd and Kodi Burns during 7 on 7 drills, etc.
- Mario Fannin looks like a beast closeup in pads. He was standing next to Philip Pierre-Louis at one point and I think he wanted to eat him and probably could have.
- Speaking of PPL, he is quick and really catches the ball with his hands well. He got a lot of seperation from the DBs.
- Tim Hawthorne looked really good out there and is easily the biggest WR.
- Tristan Davis ran a lot of plays at RB, just as much as Tate, Lester, etc.
- Coaches and QBs were all signaling to the players from the sideline like in the Peach Bowl.
- Lee Ziemba looks like he is growing his hair out and has one of those LA Laker Sasha Vujacic headbands to keep the hair out of his face.
- Hugh Nall wants to know if Lee Ziemba wants to be an "All-American". Though his tone was a little different than I can write here.
- Starting with period 12, they did some one on one drills with WRs and DBs.
- Greg Knox and Tony Franklin want to know how good does Chris Slaughter want to be.
- Speaking of #23, he limped off with what looked to be like an ankle injury but came back a few plays later and looked fine.
- Jerraud Powers, Aairon Savage and Zac Etheridge looked really good in the one on one drills and 7 on 7.
- Prettiest pass and catch of the day belongs to Chris Todd and Derek Winter. It was a 30-40 yard pass to the corner of the endzone. There was tight coverage and Winter caught it sliding over the shoulder. It received the most claps and cheers of the day.
